The eight moon phases, briefly explained

The moon takes about 29.5 days to go from new moon to new moon. Along the way it passes through eight phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent. Nothing about the moon itself changes — only our viewing angle does. At new moon it sits between Earth and sun and shows us its dark side; at full moon we sit in the middle and see it whole.

Do we sleep worse during a full moon?

Few moon questions come up as often — and few are as contested. Some studies found slightly shorter deep sleep and longer time to fall asleep around the full moon; larger analyses found no reliable effect. Honestly: a strong full-moon effect that applies to everyone is not scientifically established. Two things are real, though. Bright moonlight in your bedroom disturbs sleep like any other light source. And if you are convinced the full moon ruins your sleep, expectation alone can make the night restless.

The moon and your dreams

Whatever the studies say, many people report more vivid or stranger dreams around the full moon. There is a simple way to test it for yourself: keep a dream journal and note the moon phase with every entry — after a few months you will see in black and white whether the moon makes a difference for you. And when a dream stays on your mind, you can get it interpreted for free.

In symbolism the moon stands for what stays hidden: feelings, intuition and everything that lives below the surface of daily life. The tarot gives it its own card — »The Moon« stands for uncertainty, intuition and the courage to keep walking in half-light.

New moon and full moon as a simple ritual

Many people use the lunar cycle as an easy rhythm for self-reflection — no esoteric claims required. The new moon works as a fixed date to write down intentions for the weeks ahead; the full moon as a moment to look back: What moved? What can go? Whether you credit the moon with any influence or simply treat it as a reliable calendar in the sky is up to you — two fixed reflection dates a month do many people good.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next full moon?

The next full moon is on 29 Jul 2026, 10:37 (Buck Moon). All upcoming dates are listed in the table above.

When is the next new moon?

The next new moon is on 12 Aug 2026, 13:38 (your local time). Traditionally the new moon marks a fresh start — astronomically it is the moment the moon is unlit as seen from Earth.

Do people really sleep worse during a full moon?

The research is mixed: some studies found slightly less deep sleep around the full moon, others found no reliable effect. Two things are real though — moonlight in your bedroom disturbs sleep like any light, and expecting a bad night often makes it one.

What does the moon mean in a dream?

In dream interpretation the moon stands for the hidden side of things: feelings, intuition and rhythms that are present but not always visible. What matters is how the moon appears in your dream — calm, threatening, huge, veiled.

How accurate are the times in this calendar?

The dates are calculated astronomically (Meeus algorithm) and are accurate to within a few minutes, shown in your local time zone (America/New York).
